CNC Machining of a Nylon UHP Outer Cover for the Industrial Lab Equipment Industry
A local lab testing equipment company had a requirement for high temperature outer machine covers. Our customer previously had these outer covers produced overseas, but by turning to a domestic supplier for materials, we were able to dramatically decrease the lead times and costs of this previously expensive project. To guarantee the structural and impact strength as well as temperature resistance required, we selected rigid 30 percent glass filled nylon for the outer covers and went to work. Using our horizontal band saw, we made our initial cuts in the nylon before turning it on our CNC turning center. Milling was accomplished on our CNC vertical milling center, followed by our CNC router and pad printing machine, which transferred 2D images onto the 3D outer covers. Working from rigid customer specifications and 2D CAD drawings, we machined these 120 mm diameter X 77 mm long outer covers to exacting tolerances of ±0.002″.
Following dimensional and visual inspections, we supplied the nylon UHP outer covers to our customer in New Castle, DE, only four weeks after receiving the order.
