They use an FDA approved UHMW material for these applications due to its low friction surfaces, low moisture absorption properties, and low cost. Should metal detection be necessary, a magnetic additive can be added to the material. If steam, high heat, and pressure are an issue, calcium filled PTFE makes an excellent bearing. Other materials used for these purposes include Nylon, MDS, Rulon, and Delrin AF. Working with customer specifications and 2D CAD drawings, Wilmington uses their 2″ diameter Brown & Sharpe single spindle screw machine and 3″ Haas CNC turning center to machine these components to tolerances of ±0.002″. Following both dimensional and visual inspections, Wilmington typically delivers these conveyor system components to their customer in New Castle, DE, only three to four weeks after receiving the order.
