Vulcanized Fiber Stamping of Shoulder Washers for the Electrical Component Industry
Because of their excellent insulation properties, vulcanized fiber shoulder washers are still in high demand in the electrical component industry. Wilmington Fibre is one of only a few stamping houses that can still produce this type of washer. Contrary to what many think, vulcanized fiber does not contain any rubber. The word “vulcanized” is in reference to the chemical hardening process used in the manufacturing of the chemically pure cellulose material, which ultimately contains no resins or bonding agents. The shoulder is produced from flat sheet by compressing the material and drawing the shank simultaneously. Wilmington uses their 35 ton pneumatic OBI punch presses operating at 200 strokes per minute to perform the compound die stamping needed to generate vulcanized fiber stamped shoulder washers to precise tolerances of only ±0.005″. Wilmington works from both customer specifications and 2D CAD drawings to produce these electrical components with a turnaround time of only three weeks following receipt of order.
Wilmington Fibre, which provides dimensional and visual inspection for every shoulder washer leaving its facility, has over 250 shoulder washer compound dies in stock. Contact them today for further information.
